Cannes Film Festival leading the way for equality in the film industry with new Charter

Following the historic red-carpet protest by 82 of the most prevalent women in the film industry, the Cannes Film Festival institution has developed a new charter, which aims to give a better representation of women at the Festival, and therefore to promote gender parity. This is a move that makes the Cannes Film Festival a leading light in the fight for gender parity in the film industry, with other film festivals set to adopt a similar charter. This is a welcome course of action from an institution which has been heavily criticised in the past due to low representation of women.

'Girls Of The Sun (Les Filles Du Soleil)' Red Carpet Arrivals - The 71st Annual Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival has some rather damning statistics about gender representation: for example, in the past 70 editions of the world-renowned Festival, only two women directors have won the most prestigious award, the Palme d’Or. One of those two Palme d’Or winners, legendary French director Agnès Varda, was present at the protest: she delivered in French the powerful statement demanding equality and better representation for women in the film industry.

The Charter promises that the Cannes Film Festival institution will follow a strong set of commitments. Under the charter, statistics will be compiled based on gender – for example, the gender make-up of cast and crew of films that are submitted to the competition. Furthermore, the names of members on selection committees will be published in order to show committees are not dominated by either gender, giving women proportionately more representation than the current moment.

'Girls Of The Sun (Les Filles Du Soleil)' Red Carpet Arrivals - The 71st Annual Cannes Film Festival

Sadly, the Festival would not commit to introducing gender-parity policies for directors who are selected for competition. This is a blow to the 82 women who protested: the number 82 is the number of total women directors who have been selected for competition over the course of the Festival’s history; there have been 1,645 male directors who have had films selected over that time. Festival director Thierry Frémaux has long held the belief that films should only be selected for the competition on artistic merit alone, which is generally the consensus.

Looking at the Festival’s history, we can see a 20:1 ratio in favour of male-directed movies being selected for competition. Does Frémaux believe men are inherently overwhelmingly better directors than women? Sure, maybe there were not so many women directors in 1946 when the Festival began, so most films at the time were directed by men only. However, there are many today, yet only 3 of the 21 films selected for competition this year are directed by women. It sure makes you wonder…

It is a great thing the protest, organised by the French social movement campaigners 5050×2020, has led to action from the Cannes Film Festival superiors – hopefully, this will get the ball rolling across the whole of Hollywood and in other Film Festivals. Further progress should be encouraged, and hopefully, over the coming years, we will see more women deservedly claim the Palme d’Or awards for exceptional films.

History made by 82 leading film industry women – the fight against gender inequality progresses

'Girls Of The Sun (Les Filles Du Soleil)' Red Carpet Arrivals - The 71st Annual Cannes Film Festival

In a historic stance of defiance, 82 women marched arm in arm up the red carpet yesterday evening to protest gender inequality in the Film Industry. The demonstration took place just before the premiere of Eva Hudson’s movie ‘Girls of the Sun’ – Eva Hudson being one of just 82 female directors to have had a film premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, while there have been 1,688 male directors who can boast the same honour in the Festival’s 71 year existence.

The protest was organised by the French movement 5050×2020, which aims to achieve 50/50 gender equality in the French film industry by the year 2020. The 82 women walked up the red carpet, before turning at the height of the stairs, locking arms and confronting the many journalists and spectators, turning their backs on the world famous Cannes Film Festival venue, Palais des Festivals.

In the star-studded troupe could be found women superstars of the movie industry, such as ‘Wonderwoman’ director Patty Jenkins, who were led by this year’s female jury members. Once atop the stairs, Jury President Cate Blanchett, a proactive feminist, delivered a fierce statement, condemning the lack of equality in film, shown notably in huge pay gaps between industry professionals undertaking the same roles. Agnès Varda, the 89-year-old legendary director who is one of two women to win the Palme d’Or, delivered the statement in French.

Blanchett proclaimed: “Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of our industry says otherwise… We expect our institutions to actively provide parity and transparency in their executive bodies and provide safe environments in which to work… We expect our governments to make sure that the laws of equal pay for equal work are upheld… We demand that our workplaces are diverse and equitable so that they can best reflect the world in which we actually live.”

The photocall and press conference of the Film Jury took place earlier today: the Jury -full of film industry talents, such as Jury president Cate Blanchett and Kirsten Stewart -helped inaugurate proceedings of this year’s edition: journalists flocked and photographers tussled for the best spots, as the Jury members spoke about their delight in finally being here in Cannes for the Festival.

Fredrik Lilloe, partner of Riviera Luxury Rentals, making headlines again in The Times newspaper!

Fredrik Lilloe, partner at Riviera Luxury Rentals and CEO of Knight Frank French Riviera, was again featured in an international newspaper, discussing the prime real estate market here on the French Riviera with Liz Rowlinson, of The Times. Take a read of the article here: ‘Superyachts and stars return to Cannes‘.

The article discusses the growing confidence in prime real estate following President Macron’s election victory last year. Fredrik Lilloe emphasises this current upturn in market confidence: “This year, the billionaires showed up themselves, rather than sending representatives like they usually do”, regarding last months MIPIM 2018 event, a global real estate market for prime properties and developments.

Cannes Film Festival is just days away!

We are less than a week away now from the Cannes Film Festival!

With the Festival just days away, we thought it’d be a great moment to look at some unusual facts and mindboggling figures about the Cannes Film Festival!

1. Just 48 hours into the inaugural Cannes Film Festival of 1939, the event was swiftly halted due to the commencement of World War Two. The festival returned in 1946, and we’ve been celebrating cinema ever since!

2. 2160m is the total length of red carpet used during the Cannes Film Festival! A 60m red carpet is laid every for every movie screening, so that’s 3 times a day, over 12 days!

3. The Cannes Film Festival is one of the widely covered events in the world, highlighted by the festival being second only to the Summer Olympics as the most covered global event in 2016, with over 4,000 journalists and photographers attending.

4. The ‘Palme’ awards given to the winners in the competition are some of the most expensive awards in the world – the leaves of the palm are cast in 24-carat gold, and each award costs $21,000 to make.

5. There has only ever been one female winner of the Palme d’Or, the most prestigious prize in the competition: Jane Campion scooped the award in 1993 for her work ‘The Piano’.

6. On average, a yacht costs $570,000 per week at the Cannes Film Festival… we think renting one of our magnificent villas at Riviera Luxury Rentals is a much better idea!

We hope all attendees are looking forward to the event and have a great time! If you are looking for last minute accommodation, give us a call on +33493999675, or send me an email at!

The countdown is on!

Riviera Luxury Rentals partner Fredrik Lilloe featured in New York Times!

Riviera Luxury Rentals partner and Knight Frank French Riviera CEO Fredrik Lilloe was featured by the New York Times yesterday, as he took NY Times through a fantastic villa that is for sale near the French Riviera village of Plascassier.

Take a look at the NY Times article, within which Fredrik details the villa, and expertly discusses the current prime housing market on the French Riviera: he goes on to examine the impacts of the impending ‘Brexit’, and how this is changing the composition of buyers on the French Riviera.

Overall, a very insightful read!
